Home solar in Louisiana
New rooftop systems since 2020 earn only the utility's avoided cost for power sent to the grid (Entergy Louisiana: about 2.6 cents/kWh), and the state solar tax credit is gone; the main state perk left is a property tax exemption.

Net metering Replaced by a lower credit
Under the PSC's 2019 rules, systems that applied or were installed after Dec. 31, 2019 use two-channel billing: you pay retail for all power you buy, solar you use at home saves the full retail price, and each kWh you export is credited at the utility's avoided cost, updated yearly (Entergy Louisiana: $0.0259331/kWh from April 1, 2025). Credits can't cut the bill below the customer charge and roll to the next month. Systems installed by Dec. 31, 2019 keep 1:1 net metering until Dec. 31, 2034. Home systems up to 25 kW qualify. Source
- 2019-12-31: last day for grandfathered 1:1 net metering
- 2025-04-01: Entergy Louisiana avoided cost set at 2.59 cents/kWh
- 2034-12-31: grandfathered systems move to avoided-cost billing

Solar laws
- LPSC General Order, Docket R-33929 (Sept. 19, 2019) (2019). Replaces 1:1 net metering for new systems after 2019 with retail-in, avoided-cost-out billing; grandfathers earlier systems for 15 years. Source
- R.S. 47:1706, solar property tax exemption (1978). Solar equipment attached to an owner-occupied home or pool is exempt from property tax, and assessors may not add its value. Source
Community solar
Limited: the PSC has community solar rules and Entergy Louisiana takes developer inquiries, but no broad homeowner subscription program was confirmed.

Federal tax credits
The 30% federal tax credit for homeowners who buy solar (Section 25D) ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025, so buying no longer earns a federal credit. If you lease or sign a power purchase agreement (PPA), the panels belong to a company that may still claim a business credit under federal deadlines that tighten through 2027. Ask your installer whether that savings is in your price.
