Net metering Net metering available
Utilities must offer net metering for home systems up to 25 kW per meter. Each kWh you export offsets a kWh you buy, and extra credits roll forward month to month. Credits left at the end of the year are bought by the utility at its avoided cost, a fraction of retail. Bills to cut net metering failed in 2023 and 2025. Source

Solar laws
- Net metering, W.S. 37-16-101 to 37-16-104 (). Requires utilities to offer net metering for systems up to 25 kW per meter for homes (200 kW non-residential). Source
- SF0111 (2025), net metering revisions (2025). Would have let regulators set lower pay for exported solar for new customers. Failed on third reading in the Senate on 2-5-2025. Source
- HB0183 (2025), raise net metering size (2025). Would have raised limits and added meter aggregation; did not pass. Source

Federal tax credits
The 30% federal tax credit for homeowners who buy solar (Section 25D) ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025, so buying no longer earns a federal credit. If you lease or sign a power purchase agreement (PPA), the panels belong to a company that may still claim a business credit under federal deadlines that tighten through 2027. Ask your installer whether that savings is in your price.
